Cycling Merit Badge Campout
Lake Arcadia, OK, January '00

Friday night started out great.  We got to camp early, unloaded the trailer, picked our campsites and got camp in order.  The weather report indicated it would start raining late that night.  The duds set up a rain fly for their kitchen and covered a small pavilion with a tarp so Scouts would have a dry place to cook if it did rain.

Went to bed in a dry camp, but by midnight the front came blowing in.  Cold and wet, it rained all night.  Everyone got up to more rain.  Several Scout tents weren't positioned well and some of their gear got wet when runoff came through their tents.   That's a hard way to learn how to site your tent!

Cooked breakfast in the rain and after KP, decided this campout was over, so we packed everything up and got the trailer loaded.  Naturally, just as we finished getting everything ready to go, it stopped raining.  Scouts, being ever resourceful, decided to get on their bikes and at least cruise around the camping area some.  The trails they'd planned to ride were impassible in places, so they had to settle for pavement.

The final decision to leave was made because so much personal gear was wet that many Scouts (and not a few Duds) would have to sleep in wet sleeping bags.  We reloaded the bikes onto their trailer and headed for home.
