Camp Alexander or BUST(ed water hose)

As we were promised, we got up early.  Nice soft music started at 5:30 am, then the lights came on and the music grew louder at 5:31.  Everyone got their stuff together and were off to a breakfast of scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, and potatoes.  After breakfast, we went back to the Kiva for Sunday service by our chaplain.

We left the Koshare Indian Museum about 9 am, refueled the vehicles and regrouped at yet another Payless on the edge of town.  Mr. Grimes led the way until we reached Pueblo when Dr. Brumbuagh took over.  After getting on I-25 and heading north, the convoy gets separated.  Mr. Luff finds traveling at the speed limit rather than 10 mph below is much easier while pulling the trailer.  Then, as everyone reaches Colorado Springs, Mr. Luff decides he'd better keep on going up and through the mountain pass with the trailer or everyone would end up waiting because it was going to be very slow.

It's cooler and clear in Colorado Springs.  All but Mr. Luff and Mr. Whitacre meet at the Garden of the Gods, a little before 10 am.  Then, we hear that Mr. Luff's Suburban has blown a heater hose and Mr. Whitacre has gone to the rescue.  Mrs. Kirkpatrick takes off to meet them and the rest of us will meet up with them at the 'Popcorn Pharmacy' further west on Highway 24 where Mr. Luff and crew are waiting.

While Mr. Whitacre and Mr. Luff drive up to Woodland Park to buy parts to make repairs, some Scouts are killing time at the Popcorn Pharmacy and others are cruising the Garden of the Gods.  After a couple hours total down time to fix the truck and for everyone to find food to eat, all the vehicles regrouped in Woodland Park for the drive to camp.

Heading west on Highway 24 is beautiful country.  We turn south at Lake George and wind our way through 11-mile canyon (the river is fascinating with its rapids and white water) until we arrive at camp at 1:35 pm.  With only two vehicles allowed at the campsite, we shuttle equipment to camp and everyone walks to our campsite: Arapaho.  Camp Alexander is sheltered by hills.

No sooner than our gear is dumped on the ground, our camp guides tell us it's time to change into our Class A uniforms and trekked to the camp's Kiva for our group picture (above).  Then back to camp to change into swim suits and grab our medical forms.  We hurried up and waited some more for med checks and to get our arm bands so we can eat (banded green for non-meds, red for meds).  Finally, after more hurry up and wait, we get to the pool for swim checks at about 5:45 pm.  We are late after the swim test and eat dinner in our swimsuits (roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, salad and cherry pie).  After dinner, we head back to camp to choose tents and get schedules for the week.

Mr. Rhoades made a list of tent assignments.  He and Mrs. Kirkpatrick set up their own (separate) tents.  Mr. Mingus ended up having to set up one of the troop's Dud tents because the camp tent he was assigned to had a broken platform.

Blake B., Steven E. and Chris M. shared a tent with short poles, but they were changed out later.

Several Scouts and Mrs. Kirkpatrick went for a hike on the hill across from camp.

Finally to bet around 10:30 pm.
