From
the Scribe's perspective
At
Cedar Lake we went on a 5-mile hike.
And our patrols merged together into two patrols.
The Scorpions with the Vipers and the Lightening patrol with the
Dragons. The Scorpions/Vipers
had smoked sausage and the Lightening/Dragons were going to have hamburger
but it got messed up and had to have some of the Dud’s Stew.
There was lots of great scenery on the Hiking Trails.
From
the Scoutmaster's perspective
We
had a great campout at Cedar Lake. The early crew met at the Church at
8:00 and got away by 8:45. It was the first outing for our new trailers.
We had packed everything into one trailer and it was hooked up to Mr.
Jones’ truck.
Mr.
Rose was feeling slighted since he had handled the towing chores for so
long with the old trailer. We solved the problem by shifting some of the
load to the second trailer so Mr. Rose could also try pulling a new one.
Our first stop was at the Wild Horse Barbeque restaurant. It is your
typical hole-in-the-wall BBQ restaurant which has great food.
Next,
the early crew visited Spiro Mounds and learned of the ancient people who
lived there and created the mounds. Also, on the agenda was a visit to the
Heavener Runestone. Theories differ, but one theory is that the Runestone
was carved before Columbus discovered America. We finally reached our
campsite at around 4:00.
While
everyone went about setting up camp, Mr. Rhoades and Mr. Evans went into
Heavener to buy pizza’s for everyone. While not exactly your typical
camp meal, it was fitting for taking the extra day on the campout.
The
next day, everyone did a great job of getting up, around, doing breakfast
and preparing a trail lunch. We actually took off for and arrived at the
trail head on our scheduled time. Dr. Brumbaugh helped with the front of
the Lighting-Dragons patrol. Once they were out of sight, the reptile
patrol (Scorpions-Vipers) followed.
Finally
the Dud patrol with leadership and the milk duds took up the rear. Milk
Duds? Spencer L’s younger brother Mackey (4th grade) and Chris J’s
younger brother Cameron (3rd grade) went on the hike. Spencer’s younger
sister Sloan was busy back at camp catching fish and grasshoppers. At
first the leadership led the Duds. It didn’t take long for the milk duds
to decide that leadership needed to make way for them and they took over
and lead most of the rest of the way.
While
the Troop did the 5 mile section, Dr. Brumbaugh and Mr. Evans broke off at
mile 4 to take Josh A. Jack B., Ben E., and new Scout Austin B. on the
loop back for a total of 10 miles. Everyone had a great time on the hike.
Many
of the Scouts learned a lot. Many learned that they should have brought a
map which was provided on the web site. We got off with only a couple of
minor injuries a the very end of the hike. Overall a successful hike and
campout!
