Turkey Cookout

From the Scribe's perspective In November, Troop 168 had the annual Troop Turkey Cookout at Camp Wygant. We had some trouble when Mr. Brouster got his car and the personal gear trailer stuck in the mud. We had to get some shovels when he could not get over the built-up mud. We finally went to camp and started to set up relatively, quickly. We split up into two groups to get the job done. One group went into the pit to make ramps, and the other group went to set up the rest of camp. We switched jobs after about twenty minutes and we all got sent to bed at around 11:00. The nest morning we all woke up and started to make breakfast. Breakfast for everyone was oatmeal and breakfast meat. The Viper Patrol set up the flagpole while the Scorpions set up the opening by the gate. Everyone helped on the turkeys for the pit. After that, everyone started making the turkey dinners with the appetizers. It took everyone about 2 hours to make the food. When the adults started arriving we all got our food and utensils ready. All the adults left around 5:00 and we got ready for capture the flag after our cleanup. Before that, we all went to the campfire set up by Assistant Junior Scoutmaster BA L. and Troop Guide Chris R. All the OA members were dressed up and got started. They all had torches and one almost burned Nick Br's hand, so he had to drop the torch and it caught the grass on fire and all the grownups put it out. The way to light the fire this year was by rocket. When they lit the fire it missed and started to burn the grass and they had to put it out again. Finally they had to light the fire by torches. After awhile the fire fell down and caught the grass on fire again. Finally, we went back and played capture the flag. The next morning, we broke camp down and had a sermon by Christian P., then we went on back home. -- Your Scribe, Benjamin E.
From the Scoutmaster's perspective I suppose that this year's Turkey Cookout was a success even though we were not able to provide one of our traditions. Even though we tried, we just could not provide the chilly and rainy weather we have become used to having for Turkey Cookout. In spite of having absolutely beautiful weather, Turkey Cookout was a real success. It all started at the Church on Friday evening. Everyone showed up on time and we left close to on time. At Camp Wygant we broke into pit and campsite teams. Both did a great job. By the way, thanks to Mr. Lucas for getting a friend of his to dig a fantastic pit. We also had a Webelos guest for part of the weekend and the patrols did a good job of showing him around. On Saturday, the patrols did a good job of getting up on time, preparing the turkeys, taking care of building their camp gadgets, etc. Our campfire was nice as well, even though we had a few more fires than were planned. In general, all the Scouts did a great job over the weekend!!! -- Allen |
