Saturday, July 29th

Adults got up at 7 and woke Scouts up at 8.  Ate motel continental breakfast and everyone climbs into the van and drive to Everglades National Park.  After going through the main visitor’s center, we climbed back in the van for the drive to Flamingo Marina.  Scouts slept through most of the drive until the adults made them wake up to “see the scenery”.  At the marina, we got out to go look in a gift shop and the mosquitoes attacked in full force.  Getting back into the car after shopping, we all did battle with the dastardly beasts … killing several hundred before the van’s interior was bearable (driving with the windows down only brought more of those winged black monsters in).  Even with repellant on, they still found flesh to suck on.

On the way back we stopped at the main park sign for pictures and again at the “Robert Is Here” fruit stand, were we sampled Key Lime Milkshakes (surprisingly good).  We drove back to the motel and transferred luggage from the other vehicle, climbed back in and drove to Burger King for lunch.

After lunch, we drove to Weeks’ Air Museum and get inside just before a huge thunderstorm breaks.  The tour was a great place to for us as many of the Scouts are interested in aviation and the museum has an excellent collection of restored WWII aircraft and displays.  By the time we go outside to look at the PBY Catalina, the rain has stopped.

Not much of interest happened during the drive up to Fort Lauderdale and the Scouts all slept for most of the ride (how late did you guys REALLY stay up last night?).  We checked in at the Days Inn – Oceanside (across the street from the ocean) and after some struggle got our luggage up to our rooms.  Once again, the Scouts turn on the TV and tuned out of the world.  Everyone is tired, so when dinnertime rolls around we order pizza delivery and devour three large pizzas while watching ‘Kindergarten Cop’ in the Scout’s room.   We talk about our schedule in the morning and get to bed (adults at 10 pm … Scouts ??).
