Sunday, July 30th
Wakeup calls ring right at 6:45
am as planned and everyone gets up and dressed.
It’s a Pop-Tart breakfast this morning since the Scouts are
just about out of money (good thing we kept the Pop-Tarts from the
boat). No time to waste
after breakfast and everyone loads up their personal gear while the
adults bring the cars around.
Of course, to make matters a
little more difficult, since we were on the fourth floor, the elevator
doesn’t work and everything has to be carried down by hand, but we get
checked out and back on the road to the airport.
Once again the FRS radios helped
us out as we first stopped to fill the vehicles’ gas tanks and then
found our way to the airport. After
dropping off the Scouts and our luggage at the gate, the adults turned
around to find a Fort Lauderdale policewoman ticketing our vehicles.
Once she realized we were Scouts, she changed the citation to a
warning and wished us a safe trip home.
After returning the rental cars
and rejoining the crew, everyone checked in and headed for the departure
gate, where we boarded our first flight to Houston.
In Houston, we weren’t as pressed for time and made it between
gates with no problems. Our
flight back to Oklahoma City arrived just after noon.
The
crew was surprised walking off the ramp into the terminal when our
families greeted us waving signs and taking pictures.
It was a greeting everyone will remember for a lifetime, and it
was the perfect end to a great ocean adventure.
