Monday, July 24th

By 7:00 am, several of the Scouts were awake up on deck and were clomping around.  The captain comes out of his cabin, and boy, was he upset.  Uh oh, they woke him up before 7:30!  Bad news, and he told us all about it.

After breakfast, we cleared the decks to get ready to enter the harbor.  All the clothes and towels came off the lifelines and everything was straightened up.  At 9:15, we headed into The Galleon Marina and entered our slip at 9:40 with everyone standing at his assigned positions.  As soon as the boat is secured, Captain Harman puts us to work swabbing the decks.   Here’s where we got to pay for waking him up.  We finally got the boat clean (first into harbor, last to leave our boat) and Capt. released us.

First stop was the marina’s fresh water pool!  It’s amazing how soothing fresh water is after being in the ocean a couple of days.  Since there are only three showers for the crews of three boats (that’s 24 people total), we take turns going in and Mark, Blake and Chris get clean first.  Paco, BA and David go next and then the adults, last as usual.  We all agree to meet at the marina’s Tiki bar once we’re cleaned up.

One of the adults big concerns is whether or not to let the boys travel around Key West without adult supervision, so we talked about it with every Sea Base representative there and other adults from the other boats.  The general consensus was that it was perfectly safe, as long as the boys followed the buddy system and checked in once in a while during the day, that Key West was small and easy to get around in and didn’t pose any problems for the Scouts until well after 10 pm, when they had to be back on the boats.

As a result, after meeting at the Tiki bar, the Scouts took off in two groups of three: Mark, Blake and Chris in one; David, Paco and BA in the other; and the adults were on their own.  We agreed to meet at Burger King for lunch (it’s in a great central location) and afterward, we all went to Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum (fun).  After the museum, we walked around shopping as a group and visited Margaritaville before we broke up into groups again.  After another scheduled regrouping at 4pm, and more shopping in groups, we all met at the Hard Rock Café for dinner at 6 pm (the service took forever, service was poor, it was too loud, the Scouts did not get a discount, but the food was good).

After dinner, some Scouts went to the Sunset Festival (basically a market bazaar), and some went back to the boat.  Everyone was back at the boat by 9:15 and we sat around comparing notes about our day in town.  Some decided to walk around the docks and look at the yachts, while a couple others decided to take a quick shower before bed.  Lights were out at 10 pm, but it took a while for most to get to sleep because of the noise, commotion and lights in the marina.
