Fishing Merit Badge
Lake Texhoma, OK, October '98
| Now this was a campout
to remember! Rain, rain and yet more rain. Cooked in the rain, ate in the
rain, cleaned up in the rain and slept in the rain (well, we were in our nice, dry tents).
Saturday, it wasn't raining, but the wind was blowing ... hard. Real hard.
So hard, we'd cast a lure straight out about 30 feet and it would end up 60 feet to
our right. Too hard to put the fishing boat in the water so the Troop could do
some trolling. |
| We only caught three
fish among all of us during the day Saturday, and only one was a keeper (which we cooked
in foil on coals and everyone got to have a couple bites of). |
| We get back to camp to
start dinner at 6:00 pm, and right on schedule, it began to rain. This did give the
boys the opportunity to learn how to deal with adversity and overcome significant
problems. We all ate hot, dutch-oven-cooked meals before calling it an early night
(no campfire that night!). |
| The next morning was
cold, but at least the rain stopped during the night. After breakfast, we started
the long drying out process. Although the Scoutmaster had planned to fly a radio
controlled seaplane on the lake for awhile, it was too windy. Besides, it took the
feeble sun's heat several hours to warm us up and dry out the tents and ground
cloths. We barely had time to get all the gear packed to go home. |
| This campout was a good example of how even bad
weather can teach us things we need to know, like how to push ahead and get things done;
how to keep a charcoal cooking fire going in the rain. We're still hoping to find a
picture or two of this campout, but don't hold your breath. |
