Troop 168's high adventure program is designed
to challenge and engage our older Scouts with activities requiring good Scout skills, greater physical exertion and more mature emotional stability than needed for regular troop
outings.
For
any Venture program activity, there are one or more temporary Venture
Patrols made up of older Scouts from the troop's regular patrols who come together for these special
events, and then return to their patrols afterward where they can best share their experiences
and knowledge with the troop's younger Scouts.
Troop 168's Venture
program put Scouts' and adult leaders' knowledge & training to the test.
As these few pictures of Troop 168 Scouts show, their experiences are exciting and varied.
Most
summers, Troop 168's older
Scouts have an opportunity to attend a High Adventure Base camp in
addition to Summer Camp. Troop 168 traditionally goes to BSA Northern
Tier High Adventure Canoe Base Camps near the Minnesota-Canada border to canoe and portage through the
myriad lakes called the Boundary
Waters and Quetico Parks. Some years, Troop 168 attends high adventure outings at
Philmont
Scout Ranch
and we've been to the Pecos National Wilderness Area for extended,
primitive, two-week backpacking trips in New Mexico's mountains. We've
done scuba diving and cruised the Caribbean out of the
BSA Florida National Sea Base.
All
of the time and effort a Scout expends while earning his first several rank advancements
teaches him valuable skills which prove their worth during Troop 168's high adventure activities.
These are the outings Scouts and their leaders remember for the rest of
their lives. They are defining times in a boy's life. We've
often seen boys go on a long-term,
high adventure camp ... to return as young men.
