We met at the Church at 5:45 PM
and left at 6 PM for Venture's backpacking trip to Cedar Lake. There
were three scouts, Josh, Michael and Ryan and three Duds, David, Jerry and
Steve. It is a four-hour trip to Talimena State Park where we
camped for the night.
By 7:00 AM we were up and had breakfast going. After breakfast
tents were taken down and packs were loaded in the the truck and we headed
to Horse Thief Springs and the trailhead. At Horse Thief Springs the
truck was parked and packs were unloaded and checked and then the crew
started down the trail. Our trail followed the Talimena Trail back
to the West for one mile then turned to the North and then Northwest to
Cedar Lake. This was an easy downhill seven mile trail and we
arrived at Cedar Lake about 2:30 PM and setup camp.
Fishing gear had been packed with the hope of having fresh fish for
dinner. But the lake had been drained that summer and then refilled
and the fish had not been stocked yet. So we hiked around the lake
and explored the campground.
Sunday morning we were up by 7:00 AM and on the trail by 8:00 AM.
The first half of the trail was level and easy to travel but the last half
we started climbing and had to rest often. By noon we were having
lunch at Horse Thief Springs.
