Slept in until 6 this morning. Thunderstorms came through from midnight to 4am, so the mosquitoes were awful this morning. We decided to pack up and get onto Moose Lake for breakfast just to get away from the bugs. The wind is down, so the going is easy and that's a nice change after what we've been through the past few days. Powerboats go by … the smell of civilization (burned fuel) and we have to deal with boat wakes. On our first day out, the wakes caused us lots of trouble. Now, they're hardly a bother. It's a hot, sunny day and we end up at a rotten campsite fixing breakfast on a rocky shoreline. Still, Jerry C. outdoes himself with eggs, hash browns, hot chocolate and coffee that were all good (no small feat with powdered eggs and dehydrated potatoes!). Only about 6 miles to go to base and it's just 9am. We're not supposed to be back before 3pm, so we take our time paddling down the lake. Although we'd planned to stop for lunch, the lure of base draws us on and we reached the Sommers waterfront at 11am, cleaned out the canoes and toted our packs up the hill to the Quartermaster's, where we ended up having to wait till 1:30 for them to open. So, we ate some lunch and took it easy until they opened and we turned in our gear. We went up to our assigned 'off water' cabins, set up drying lines and hung out just about everything we had. Made several trips to our vehicles to get our road bags and gear and begin sorting everything out for the trip back. Everyone took off at different times (as soon as they finished their personal stuff) and headed for the showers and a dry sauna (AHHHHH!). Most hit the trading post at least once and dinner was at 6pm (a real disappointment … we were hoping for better). After dinner the adults from both crews sat on the porch and completed the camp's opinion survey. Then we all went to the camp's Rendezvous in the lodge (sort of a campfire-type affair) at 8:30. Most went straight to bed afterward, although two adults had to run into town on business.

99a014.JPG (14103 bytes) Watching a Bald Eagle do some fishing is a treat.  We got to see one of these raptors stoop until skimming the lake, then stab his talons into the water and slowly, slowly rise with a fish.
