99a062.JPG (24433 bytes) When you've carried a canoe for a half-mile, it feels like it weighs a ton and has a mind of it's own on where it wants to go.  While the last half of "Oh" was a nice trail, the first half was a killer.  Day 2 - This Man Lake

Slept in an extra 30 minutes, but ate breakfast, broke camp and made it on the water at 8am. Fifteen minutes later, we reached our portage and it turned out to be an easy one. However, the next portage we came to wasn't easy at all. At the end of the day, our crew named it "OH". It was 136 rods long (16.5 feet per rod), very steep and exceptionally hard. The next portage was also long, but didn't have quite as much elevation, so we later named it "SHE". Our maps showed the next portage to only be 60 rods long, half as long as the others, so we thought it would be a lot easier. Wrong! Of all those done this day, it was the worst and got named "IT" (You figure it out, just say them together). The elevation was incredible, footing terrible and it simply wore us all out. This was the portage Mark L. blew out his left knee and broke his boots, thereby guaranteeing himself a challenging trip. Just after that portage, we stopped for lunch on an island to recuperate and then pushed on again. When we stopped at 4pm to set up camp, our total distance was 22.1 miles. We quickly set up camp and ate, then had a terrible time hanging the bear bags. We slept on rock again, but at least we had wild blueberries growing all around to snack on. Everyone was in bed by 8:30pm and asleep within minutes.
